Collection: 5c Buffalo Indian Head Nickels USA

The Buffalo nickel – also called the Indian Head nickel – was designed by James Earle Fraser and struck from 1913 to 1938.

About the Buffalo nickel

  • 1913 Type 1 and Type 2
In 1913 the bison's raised mound (Type 1) was changed to flat ground (Type 2) to protect “FIVE CENTS” from wear
  • The metal
    75% copper, 25% nickel
  • Watch the date
The date sits on the Indian's shoulder, where it wears away easily, so full-date coins are prized
  • Errors & varieties
Listed errors and die varieties, plus graded Buffalo nickels

A few modern buffalo-design coins are listed here too.
